Lakeland Smolt
Lakeland Smolt commenced operations in 1987 from two sites in Cumbria chosen for their exceptional water quality and disease free status. The hatchery and head office is at Holmwrangle, near Armathwaite, with additional smolt units at Haweswater Reservoir some 30 miles further south. Lakeland Smolt also operate in Argyll on the west coast of Scotland, with freshwater sites in Cairndow, Furnace and Carnasserie. We also operate further sites in the north of Scotland and Shetland (Lakeland Unst). This gives Lakeland the ability, year after year, to supply customers with the finest eggs.
Lakeland Smolt has supplied disease free smolts throughout Shetland, Scotland, Ireland, France and Spain since 1989. Our aim is one of continued improvement. The Lakeland fish is well recognised throughout the industry for excellent growth potential and low grilsing.

The experience and control throughout our operation allows Lakeland to deliver:
- Disease free smolts
- Correct numbers of fish at low stress levels
- A fast growing late maturing fish
Lakeland Smolt can deliver from September through to May. It has excellent results from pioneering work on photoperiod smolts with the first 0-year fish delivered in 1993.
The customer can clearly now have a phased smolt input with delivery in the autumn available for harvest after only one summer in seawater. 0-year smolts are available to order and provide the customer with:
- A large smolt with early harvest potential
- One summer in seawater and excellent performance
- No grilsing
- A good return on investment
In 2009 Lakeland supplied in excess of 8.5 million smolts of which over 4 million were out of season.
