Quality, Technology & Environmental Awareness
The Lakeland Group has been established for over 20 years and have become recognised world wide for producing the highest quality eggs, smolts and fish. The group has become fully integrated with production of eggs right through to fillets and the finished product.
Management
Management of each company within the group is devolved to individual managers with many years experience in fish farming. This plays a vital role in ensuring the policies and strategies of the group are innovative and forward looking yet realistic.
All day to day decisions concerning production and sales are made by company managers, ensuring awareness and proactivity on the sea sites as well as in the marketplace. At the same time, there is considerable interchange of information between the companies, which allows the group to function very efficiently on the global stage.
Research and Development
The Lakeland Group is progressive and continually at the forefront of new technologies, new processes and new products. The Group has been a pioneer in the development of production methods and marketing strategies. The Group has a close relationship with leading aquaculture experts worldwide.
Quality Control
The marine farms are located in carefully chosen sites where clean, clear well-oxygenated water continually flows through the rearing units. The groups farming programme ensures the production of healthy fish. Highest quality feeds are chosen and considerable attention is paid to the type and source of raw materials.
Traceability
The companies within the Group are vertically integrated throughout the production process. Juveniles are supplied from our own broodstock and hatcheries. Broodstock are carefully selected and maintained and juveniles are reared under the most strict practices and continually monitored in carefully controlled environments. This results in complete traceability from broodfish through egg to final market product.
Welfare
The Lakeland Group conforms with the Code of Good Practice for Scottish Finfish Aquaculture (CoGP) principles of animal welfare and the ‘Five Freedoms' which is based on the Government Response to the Farm Animal Welfare Council's report on the welfare of farmed fish, the five freedoms are:
- Freedom from hunger and malnutrition;
- Freedom from discomfort;
- Freedom from pain, injury or disease;
- Freedom to express normal behaviour; and
- Freedom from fear and distress
The Lakeland Group operates to these high standards and are committed to improving on industry standards where possible.
Environmental Control
The Group's policy is to farm its fish with due respect to preserving the environment and consideration of animal welfare. Ensuring environmental and operational sustainability is paramount and we regularly monitor environmental conditions and the health status of our fish using specialized environmental experts. Working in this way not only ensures the sustainability of operations but also the health and vigour of our fish.
To help proactively manage our environmental impacts, we have put in place an Integrated Environmental Management System (IEMS). To demonstrate our environmental credibility, we will seek and maintain external certification of our IEMS to the international standard ISO 14001.
Our senior managers will be fully and proactively involved in realising this policy. This will include setting and reviewing objectives and targets, the environmental management programme and procedures, communicating the EMS to employees and ensuring that all employees receive appropriate environmental training.
